Maravanthe beach, Padukone & Sauparnika river

Maravante is a picturesque place 14 kms from Kundapura town (50 kms from Udupi, Karnataka) on National Highway 17. Arabian sea on the left and Souparnika river on the right makes this a unique landscape. Besides the amazing view of sea and river, this place is also known for virgin beaches, recently introduced boating and Padukone village, birthplace of Prakash Padukone and now famous Deepika Padukone…

Refer image below- The island like place you see on the right is the Padukone village. Badminton legend Prakash PadukoNe and now bollywood celebrity Deepika Padukone have their roots in this small village, covered by water by most sides. (It is connected by road as well from one side, but a boat ride across the Souparnika river from Maravante side is the popular mode of transportation for villagers and visitors)

Some of our relatives were living at Padukone, hence this place is synonymous with boat ride for me. Besides the hand rowed boat which ferries people across the river, a motorized boat has been introduced recently to take visitors for a jolly ride into the Souparnika river. For a boat-full of people (say 10 people), half an hour ride costs Rs 450. During rainy season water level will be far higher than what you see now and boat service is often suspended and people rely on round about bus route.
Sea at Maravante is not ideal to enter into, due to huge pile of rocks stacked to prevent soil erosion and protect NH17. For that you can go back a little to Trasi or drive ahead just a few kms to find a place called Nagur, from where you can take a small road which leads to a beautiful beach with couple of big rocks…(take the first exit on left-seek help from villagers if needed). Afternoon time will be ideal due to slightly less water levels, compared to late evening. Sunset will be a bonus...
Villagers claim this is the bone of a shark...
Dead Body of the deadly Sting-ray fish. This is the fish that killed Steve Irvin...
Turtle Bay resort would have been an ideal place in case you prefer to stay here, but unconfirmed reports tell me that currently  this resort is not in a good condition due to lack of maintenance and not enough number of customers. Do check on that. Kundapur town has couple of good hotels.

I can see a few huts on the left but where is the village? While in Bangalore we had heard of Padukone village but never got around visiting it.

Well, the village (other homes and people) are not visible in the photo- They're little inside on the partial island

Maravanthe is in my must visit places for a long time. Good photos of the place and sea creatures.

Thanks for the post on Padukone. I guess, one can enter maravanthe beach climbing down the rocks rather than takin a route via kambadakone or nagoor.

Regarding celebrities from Padukone, Do you think Deepika is legendary? I dont think she is proud to be called that she is from that part of Karnataka(Dunno whether she is proud to be called that she is from Karnataka, she uses more of English rather than Kannada even in Kannada interviews pretending that she isnt well versed with Kannada). She doesnt even spell Padukone as it should be. She pronounces it as Padukon if you've seen her on TV interviews or the radio ones. I know Prakash Padukone is humble but Deepika is certainly not.

Yes Raveesh, do visit it sometime

Sandesh,
In view of the sentiments expressed by you, I've renamed legendary to famous... I am no particular fan of movies and do not track the developments closely...It is sad if she intentionally twists the name of her birthplace...

Also I should have taken another photo of people crossing the river on a boat-missed it...

Sai Vishram Beach Resort is good to stay in Maravanthe area.

The Resort is completely vegetarian and does not serve or entertain liquor.

It is located on a hill at 200 m of beachfront extending up on to a hillock. Every one of the 19 dwelling units has its own view of the sea.

Check the details of Sai Vishram Beach Resort.

OK, now I get it!

@ Anonymous,
Your rates, starting from 3500 onwards till Rs 8000 per couple per day, is too high I feel, as Byndoor is not a top tourist location and there's no reason to charge at par with 5 star hotels or resorts like Club Mahindra... Anyway best wishes and I've decided not to delete your comment..

@ Mridula Ok...

Padukone is my native land too. I have a lot of child hood memories associated with this place and when I read about it in your blog, I was taken back to my child hood days. We had our house opposite Gregory High school which is the only High school there. I have heard that it as got a junior college now . The Maravanthe beach that your have captured on your camera is one of the most beautiful beaches one could ever see. One cannot but marvel when you see this wonder. The Arabian see on one side and the river on the other and you have a small thin road pass by between the two. Over the last few years the water levels have come up and you can see the waves hitting the road but about 10 years back the water was right behind and you would have about a 5-7 min walk from the road to touch the water. Because of the rising water levels it is not safe to venture too deep into the sea. I have not tried the alternate route suggested by you via nagur.

People of that area are very warm and welcoming and they will proudly show you around if you intend to explore the area. Another must have is a bottle of ‘sunti soda’ that you get on the other side of the road towards the river side.

Smita

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Yes, I know Shunti soda or goli soda is very popular in this region.

Rising water level has been a concern- lots of money spent on dumping rocks to prevent sand erossion. Its even possible that in about an hundred years this road will get submerged. Hope it doesn't.

How do you plan to live/do business there without knowing local language? Hire a local youth who can help...

I'm living far away in Chennai and can't help with this. Let us see if others can.

Give some background about yourself. That may help

can anyone provide me some information about land rates(preferably per sq feet) around maravanthe beach....?

vaibhavi said...

well, I totally agree with what mr. sandesh has mentioned about deepika padukone!! kindly delete that part of description!A woman who is not proud about her birth place, her native language and worse of all who does not want to pronounce her own surname with pride,,she doesn't deserved to be remembered or discussed about anywhere! She is an insult to the beautiful place!

Shrinidhi Hande said...

Vaibhavi: Agree. But I noticed that tourists or outsiders who are otherwise ignorant about this place suddenly take interest in it once they hear that it is Deepika's birthplace.

@Santu: You may go to Ottinene for better sunset pictures.

Anonymous sieaus: Sorry, couldn't reply earlier- hows your business going?

Ravi: Could u get the information you wanted? Try contacting some real estate agents, who might be listed on just dial etc. There're plans to widen the national highway
