Dancing Peacock Photo from Karanji Kere, Mysore

-2020 update: Had to remove photos due to technical issue (site where I had uploaded them went down)- will try to restore -

Had a close encounter with peacocks yesterday in Mysore’s Karanji Kere lake… Despite having made several trips to Mysore during 2010, I had to miss Karanji lake and Chamundi Hills every time-either due to time or because no one else was interested. During our short Mysore visit yesterday, I drove first to  Chamundi hills, next to Karanji kere and said everything else later.

More about Karanji kere in future posts. This post shares some up close photos of peacocks dancing. Many past instances where I had  a chance to sea peacocks dancing with all their feathers open, I could never take proper photo-either due to wired mesh between the tourist and the bird or due to other limitations such as not having camera at hand or the bird being too far for a quality photo or refusing to spread its feathers as we watched.

Karanji lake in Mysore has a special enclosure where our feathered friends are kept. The difference between this enclosure and other zoos is that public can walk right into the enclosure and have close look at the peacocks, turkeys and few other birds.  These birds are used to human presence near them, hence they won’t mind people coming close and move around freely. It was great experience walking so close to these birds.

I’d have almost pet it like I’d have done to a dog or cat, but the peacocks weren’t so comfortable let me touch them. They walked faster in opposite direction to maintain some safe distance.. (we are not supposed to touch them either)

This post shares some close photos of a peacock dancing with its feathers spread out. Hope you’ll enjoy them.

sadly this poor bird is found on lesser numbers in today's India.
