Big Buddha Statue- Phuket's latest attraction and viewpoint

Big Buddha is a 45 meter tall, 26 meters wide and 135 ton heavy concrete + marble statue of Buddha, located in the centre of Phuket island in Thailand. I visited this place on one of the evenings with Rohit Tripathi, just before closing time.

When we visited Big Buddha statue in Phuket in August this year, it was still under construction. Work reportedly started in 2009. The statue was completed in 2015 and surroundings are being readied at present. Thus we can say Big Buddha is one of the latest attractions in Phuket. The space under the statue was full of construction materials, idols etc. Hopefully it will be complete soon. Under the statue there's a circular hall, where I am guessing more statues will be placed and some history details and meditation space may be.

View of Phuket city from Big Buddha- this could be your biggest motivation to visit Big Buddha- the views are amazing. It was about 6.30 PM when we visited. Had we reached an hour earlier could have got better photo. Also missed by DSLR

The roads leading to Big Buddha Phuket are fun to drive- involve sharp turns, steep slopes etc. If you're not a confident driver/rider take a friend along.

Big Buddha statue is about 25 kms from Patong area. Best way to reach is to rent a bike and explore on your own. If not there're tour operators who conduct half day tours that involve Big Buddha and few other places in South Phuket for a price ranging from 600 to 1000 baht per person in a shared minibus. About an hour is adequate time to explore around and take photos. Try visiting around sunset time.
