Volcano point Mauritius Trou Aux Cerfs
Trou Aux Cerfs is a spot in central Mauritius which has a huge crater- about 300-350 meter diameter and 80 meters deep. The volcanic crater was reportedly created over 2 million years ago, last eruption was 700000 years ago and is still deemed active with a possibility of eruption in the future.
A nice 1 km walking trail has been made circling the crater. Vehicles are not allowed here and people can enjoy a nice run, with a great view of the city at one point.
Some open air gym equipment are also established if you feel like exercising. Couple of spots exist to sit and relax. A toilet facility is also available. No shops. A weather monitoring setup is also there.
Most Mauritius commercial packages include a stop here as it comes on the way while returning from Camarel 7 coloured earth park.
We can't walk down into the Trou Aux Cerfs volcanic crater. That would have been a nice experience. Need to only see from top. View is OK only from few select points as vegetation has grown. Drone view would be nice. Some pics show a lake in the middle- I didn;t see any- maybe dried out or covered in glass.
You can skip Trou Aux Certs if short of time.
I think this will be my last post on Mauritius. Maybe one more on Mauritius Itinerary. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
